Asia-Europe Shipping: Suez Returns And Port Risks

Changing Asia-Europe shipping patterns could bring fresh congestion challenges to Northern European ports as more vessels return to the Suez Canal. Ships taking the shorter passage may arrive alongside those completing longer journeys around the Cape of Good Hope, concentrating arrivals and increasing pressure on cargo handling.

The transition comes as several major hubs already face operational constraints. Rotterdam’s ECT and Maasvlakte II terminals have stretched yard capacity, with barge and feeder delays ranging from 12 to 72 hours. Berth congestion is also delaying some vessel calls in Antwerp.

Bremerhaven faces high yard utilisation, while delayed arrivals and labour constraints are affecting Wilhelmshaven. Hamburg remains operationally stable despite busy yards, and Le Havre has experienced disruption following a terminal system incident and local strikes.

Overlapping arrivals could compound these difficulties, affecting onward feeder connections and delivery schedules. UK ports, including Felixstowe and Southampton, could also experience vessel bunching, while berth works are already contributing to some vessel delays at London Gateway.

Industry reports suggest around 60% of capacity deployed between the Far East and Europe has returned to Suez, rising to approximately 70% on Mediterranean trades. However, the recovery in Suez Canal shipping remains uneven, with some services using the canal towards Europe but returning to Asia around southern Africa.

For UK importers, shorter voyages offer welcome benefits, although further disruption remains possible before arrival patterns settle. Allowing flexibility in delivery planning remains sensible while carrier networks adjust.
