Suez Canal Shipping Recovery Continues Amid Regional Risks

Suez Canal shipping is showing signs of recovery as container services gradually return to the route. Shorter Asia-Europe shipping journeys could benefit UK businesses, but escalating Middle East tensions continue to complicate the outlook.

September saw 314 containership crossings through Bab el-Mandeb, the southern entrance to the Red Sea. According to Lloyd’s List Intelligence, this was 64.4% higher than a year earlier and the strongest monthly total since attacks began in late 2023. Linerlytica estimates that more than 140 vessels, representing over two million TEU of capacity, have returned to Suez routings since May.

Further changes are planned, including westbound Suez passages for ONE’s FE1 and IOX services in November. Shorter voyages could benefit UK importers and exporters while releasing effective capacity as ships complete their rotations more quickly.

However, security concerns remain significant. The Chinese-operated CUL Klang was reportedly fired upon near Mocha on 7 October. Its crew were unharmed and it continued its voyage, although responsibility remains unconfirmed. Fighting around Bab el-Mandeb has also intensified, adding uncertainty at a crucial point on the Suez route.

Wider disruption has continued into this week. Further shipping attacks have been reported around Hormuz, while Riyadh airport’s closure has been extended until 17 October. Qatar Airways has also suspended flights to Riyadh and Dammam following attacks on Saudi airports.

The improving Suez figures therefore offer encouragement without guaranteeing stable schedules. Individual services may follow different routes as carriers assess conditions.

For UK businesses arranging ocean freight from Asia, changing routes make it important to review sailing options and expected transit times before booking. Contact the Atlantic International team to discuss your cargo and arrangements for your next shipment.
